    Anti-Conformity for ALL… get it…?

Very few people want to be known as conformists but the reality is that it takes a rare individual to break free of social conventions and mores. The tendency to follow the herd is fairly strong in humans to begin with and both society and peer pressure added to the mix it is a miracle we don’t all fall into line and go soaring over the cliff with the rest of the lemmings. Truth be told lemmings don’t really all stampede off cliffs. They migrate when their population in a certain area can no longer sustain them and sometimes in their migrations many die of exhaustion while looking for a new home. Humans on the other hand have been known to drink cyanide laced kool aid because their leader said they must and because everyone else was doing it while others listened and obeyed monsters like Charles Manson, Joseph Stalin, Adolph Hitler, Pohl Pot, Saddam Hussein, Augusto Pinchoet, Kim Jong-il and of course Tyra Banks and Oprah. Yes the urge to conform is great but it is possible to swim against the tide. First you must be aware of the danger of just being pushed along. You need to take a stand and be yourself unless in the words of Joss Wheadon, you suck. In which case make changes and become the person you would like to be. Being a non conformist won’t instantly make you into a better person. What it will do is make you see things more clearly and decide your own path. Will it make you happy? Not necessarily. For every life of quiet desperation there are ten who are blissfully ignorant. For those of us who would choose the red pill but take the blue pill for comfort’s sake, conformity is truly the slowest form of suicide.

Some of my favorite AntiConformity quotes:

-The man who follows the crowd will usually get no further than the crowd. The man who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has ever been.
    Alan Ashley-Pitt

-If you want to succeed you should strike out on new paths, rather than travel the worn paths of accepted success.
    John D. Rockefeller

-The great pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.
    Walter Bagehot

-Once in a while it really hits people that they don’t have to experience the world in the way they have been told to.
    Alan Keightley

-Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.
    Sir Cecil Beaton

-Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
    Apostle Paul
